Customers at Cedar Tavern helped police catch two men suspected of breaking in to an ice cream shop across the street Monday night and stealing the cash register.
Bar patrons called Leelanau County Dispatch about 10:30pm to say a man had broken the window of Blue Moon Ice Cream Shop, took something from the business, and fled in a car. The callers didn't see what he took, but did see the car's license plate number. That was enough for police, who arrested the men in the car after the vehicle returned and drove slowly by the scene of the crime a short time later.
The men are believed to have ditched the register in a nearby wooded area. They took $13 from the till and now face up to 10 years in prison.
