In a study session Monday night, the Traverse City Commission considered Commissioner Jim Carruthers' proposal to change the name of Division Street. The name change was intended to reflect a a change in thinking about the busy street away from what many feel is a real division between the east and west side of the City.
The City Commission took no formal action on the proposal, but a round of comments by each commissioner was not supportive of pursuing the proposal. The City has discussed making improvements to the corridor and still has a list of near and long term recommendations from a citizen-led Division Street Steering Committee. In addition, Michigan Department of Transportation, which has jurisdiction over the road, is studying possible improvements after a ballot initiative from 2012 makes it possible for City parkland to be allocated for a shift of the public right of way.
