A community memorial gathering for local resident Bob Russell is planned for Sun., Sept. 8, at noon on the historic front lawn of Building 50 at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Russell was a community advocate, environmentalist and leader in the peace and justice movement in the region for decades. He co-founded the Neahtawanta Research and Education Center with his wife Sally Van Vleck. He also served as chairman of the Grand Traverse Board of Public Works that upgraded the city wastewater treatment plant into a state-of-the-art facility. Russell died Aug. 23 after a battle with cancer.
