Downtown Fight Leads to Two Arrests

Traverse City Police arrested two suspects after an altercation in the 100 block of South Union Street on August 18, at 2:14 a.m. Here's what happened: a TC police officer observed an argument between two males near the House of Doggs restaurant. Upon exiting his patrol car, the officer was informed that one suspect had pulled a knife on another male and threatened him with it. The officer immediately detained the suspect, a 27-year-old male from Lake Ann, and was able to remove the knife from his pocket. The suspect was arrested for felonious assault. The man whom the suspect had threatened, a 40-year-old man from Oak Park, was arrested for drunk and disorderly, as well as possession of synthetic narcotics. Both suspects were lodged in the Grand Traverse County Jail.

Seriously, 'take care of business' --- maybe that's what the guy with the knife thought he was doing ...... so we now have thug cops instead of thug drunks? That's better? Wow!!!

In most cities, if a patron is over-served by the bar tender/establishment, then has an accident on the way home, the bar is also held responsible. Thus, they refuse further service to an obviously drunk patron.

Why not put the same stipulations for serving drunks who then cause trouble (fights, stabbings, etc.). In short, make the establishment accountable for their sales to those already drunk.

What's going on down there? Do our city cops seriously have the time and manpower to babysit this area? It is obvious that the two bars and the punks they cater to are the problem, so lets start there---how about an ordinance where downtown bars can only be open till 11 PM. Maybe the punks that CAUSE the trouble will simply go away.
OR, better yet, lets pay a bit more, and have a couple of rouge cops hang out there and just "take care of business".
