Munson Medical Center officials are encouraging everyone – 6 months of age and older – to get a flu vaccination now. Even though there have been few outbreaks reported across the country, that could change in a second.
"With a national mortality figure equivalent to the population of the greater Traverse City area, this is not to be taken lightly," says Karen Speirs, D.O, section chief of infectious disease at Munson.
The 2013-14 flu vaccine guards against three types of influenza: a H1N1type A virus widespread in 2009, a H3N2 type A virus from 2011 and a Massachusetts 2012 influenza type B virus. Some vaccines also offer protection against four types of influenza, two type A viruses and two type B viruses.
Physician offices and some area retailers offer the vaccine. Flu clinics are also planned at the Health Department (995-6111) and Munson Urgent Care offers the flu shot for $45 while supplies last.
