Northport Woman Facing Charges Following Crash

Feb. 17, 2017

An 18-year-old Northport woman could face charges following an accident in Leelanau Township Wednesday.

Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputies and Northport Fire and Rescue personnel were dispatched to East Melkild Road near North Nelson Roa at 7:55am in response to a report of a vehicle off the road. Responders found a grey Pontiac Grand Prix down an embankment, with the vehicle unoccupied.

Deputies located the driver at a home on North Foxview Drive. She told deputies the crash occurred Tuesday night at 11pm when she was driving on East Melkild Road and a deer ran out in front of her. The driver stated she lost control of the vehicle, traveling off the road and down the embankment. She said she did not report the accident because her driver's license was expired.

Deputies issued the driver a citation for failing to report a traffic crash and having an expired license. The woman, who was uninjured in the crash, will be scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
