Bellaire-based Short's Brewery Co. has purchased 538,552 kilowatt hours of renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by wind farms across America, enough to offset 100 percent of the company's electricity use at its brewpub in Bellaire, production brewery in Elk Rapids and administrative offices in Wixom. It purchased the credits from Renewable Choice Energy in Boulder, Colorado. Such facilities generate RECs when they produce electricity. Purchasing these credits at the same quantity as a company's electricity consumption guarantees that the energy used is added to the power grid from a renewable energy facility and supports further development of these projects.
Short's says its other sustainability efforts include solid waste reduction and recycling, water recapture/reuse and reuse of spent grain for feeding local livestock.
