Freshmen students at Traverse City High School, TC West Senior High and TC Central High will all receive basic water safety instruction under a new program developed by Traverse City Area Public Schools and the Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation Department.
"After a number of devastating losses of life this summer in area waterways, we decided that providing water safety instruction directly to students was the best way we could serve our community," says Parks and Recreation Director Jason Jones.
The three-hour course starts next week and is a combination of "Water Safety Today" training from the American Red Cross along with topics that have directly affected this region, including "dry drowning," hypothermia and shallow-water blackouts taught by the Grand Traverse Health Department, US Coast Guard and Safe Kids North Shore. Classes will be held at the county's Civic Center and Easling Pool. By May 2014, 745 students will have completed the program.
