Traverse City Getting An Armory

Oct. 22, 2014

Traverse City is getting its first armory. The Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs has announced the opening of a facility at the site of a former college prep academy. Renovations are underway to meet the needs of the 1073rd Maintenance Company.

In a statement earlier this year by State Rep. Wayne Schmidt ( R-Traverse City) announcing a $2 million allocation in the 2015 budget for the facility, Schmidt said "the legislature identified ways to improve facilities and provide for Michigan's National Guard presence." And with the help of community leaders "we recognized the need for an armory in northern Michigan and were able to bring one right here to the Traverse City area."

Sources say an official announcement ceremony will be held in the coming weeks.
