Free Backpack, Bike Helmet Giveaways For Youth

By Beth Milligan | July 18, 2025

Two separate organizations are giving away free supplies to local youth this month. Norte Youth Cycling will give away 500 bike helmets in sizes ranging from toddlers to teens in partnership with Cherry Capital Airport on July 25, while Verizon Wireless retailer Round Room will give away free backpacks at four area stores on July 27.

Norte will host its free helmet giveaway, Free Lids for Cyclin’ Kids, between 10am and 6pm on Friday, July 25 at the Norte Clubhouse on the south side of the Grand Traverse County Civic Center. Helmets will be gifted on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We are deeply grateful to Cherry Capital Airport for their incredible generosity in providing 500 children’s bicycle helmets," said Norte Executive Director Jill Sill. "This essential gift ensures more young riders in our region can safely and confidently explore their communities by bike. When paired with the education and empowerment provided through Norte Youth Cycling programs, these bicycle helmets become more than just safety gear, they become tools for confidence, connection, and lifelong independence."

Verizon-authorized retailer Round Room will host its annual “School Rocks Backpack Giveaway” on Sunday, July 27 at 1pm. Families can get a free backpack - one per present child while supplies last - at four northern Michigan store locations. Locations include:

> 1505 Benzie Highway US 31 in Benzonia
> 85 Cypress St in Manistee
> 100 S Morenci Ave in Mio
> 2770 Silver Lake Road, Suite 3 in Traverse City

Round Room has given away more than 1.5 million backpacks nationwide since the program's inception in 2013.
