Man Arrested After Crashing Into Ditch

By Beth Milligan | Feb. 16, 2019

An Onekama man was arrested early Friday morning after crashing into a ditch and then banging on nearby doors to try and get a ride.

Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputes responded to a report at 3:30am on M-22 near East Walters Drive of a man knocking on residents' doors asking for a ride to Onekama. Upon arriving in the area, deputies located the man next to a 2006 white Nissan that had slidden off the road and crashed into a ditch.

An investigation determined the man had left a location in Traverse City and drove north on M-22 trying to get to Onekama - which is more than 50 miles in the opposite southwest direction - when he lost control of his vehicle. The driver had been drinking and was determined to be intoxicated. The man was arrested for drunk driving and taken to the Leelanau County Jail.
