Multiple New Tenants, Renovations, Events Planned For Logan's Landing

By Beth Milligan | July 19, 2017

Multiple new tenants are set to open their doors at Logan’s Landing – part of an ongoing revitalization of the shopping center that includes property improvements, community events and increased recreational traffic from the adjacent Boardman River.

Property Manager Darraugh Opelski has spent the last year working to bring Logan’s Landing back to its former glory as a booming retail and restaurant hub. “I think we’re approaching this threshold where we will soon be able to have something for everyone,” says Opelski. After modernizing several of the mall’s interior spaces, Opelski attracted new tenants including Escape Salon – which relocated to Logan’s Landing from East Front Street in May – and gourmet goods and culinary marketplace Now You’re Cooking, which opened the same month.

Also in May, Logan’s Landing introduced a new coffee shop and deli called Kramer’s Bread & Butter on the north end. Opelski sees the riverfront coffee shop as a key anchor she hopes will drive traffic to the retail center. Last week, Kramer’s welcomed a compatible neighbor in Bookbrokers, specializing in used books, collectibles, games, gifts, appraisals and more. The store, owned by Dr. Dan McDougall, plans to offer readings, game nights, music and other events throughout the year.

Now three more businesses will soon bring the number of tenants at the property – including long-time fixtures like Panda North, Ebb Tide Resale and Riverside Resale Furnishings – to 15.

Amy Kleman is targeting an August opening for her new clothing, accessories and organic skincare boutique called Belle’s Boutique. The store will be located across the hall from Kramer’s. Kleman says she will offer exclusive lines like Articles of Society denim – currently only available at Nordstrom downstate – as well as Kensie sweaters, loungewear, coats, fair-trade products and more.

“It’s industrial chic with a boho vibe,” says Kleman. “We’re doing boutique style, but not boutique prices. We’re looking to offer products for a variety of ages.”

After selling her products at local farmers markets and retail locations including Maxbauers for four years, Confections By Kim owner Kim Norton is ready to open her own storefront and bakery. Water’s Edge Sweet Tooth, located between Riverside and Schieber’s Stitch Shop, will sell cookies, baked goods and customized products such as wedding cakes and decorated treats.

Norton, a licensed baker, is targeting a September 1 opening.

Phillip Leete was also attracted to the “unique experience” offered by the South Airport Road property. Leete is planning a September 1 opening of Quarkmine, a tech center and hub “where any person in the region with a question about technology can have their questions answered with hands-on experience,” Leete says. For the past year, Quarkmine has worked with 13 different school districts around the region in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities, particularly competitive robotics. The organization’s storefront will offer multiple robotics platforms, but also manufacturing equipment, 3D printers, computer programming language courses and more.

Quarkmine will offer classes for both kids and adults covering a wide range of tech-related fields. “We’ll be running classes on how all those things work. Most classes are broken into one-hour chunks, so they can fit around busy lifestyles. We’ll have a lot of equipment on-site available for the public to use.” Leete says. Quarkmine will also host open community creative challenges, like having an autonomous boat race where self-designed mini boats are launched on the Boardman River and must race themselves out into Boardman Lake and back.

As with other tenants, Leete cites the family-friendly vibe of Logan’s Landing and amenities like parking as reasons he was attracted to the site. “Especially when we run some larger events at the space, parking is a big deal,” he says.

Opelski says tenants have begun forming partnerships to not only extend their own reach, but generate awareness of the entire property. “They’re befriending one another and comparing notes to see how they can help each other out,” she says.

The tenants’ first major community outing will be an August 5 event spearheaded by Kramer’s in partnership with the TC West Senior High School Class Council called “School’s In – Hunger’s Out.” The event will include outdoor games, music, food, a dunk tank, a mini farmers market and other activities. Admission is one non-perishable food item per guest to benefit the TCAPS Food Pantries. Half of market sales will also benefit the cause.

Opelski hopes to host more community events at Logan’s Landing in the future, including a potential weekly farmers market. In addition to ongoing interior renovations, major roofing and painting projects are set to get underway at the property this summer, and a new deck will be installed near the north end of the site. Road signage upgrades and a future “exciting bridge project” are also in the works, Opelski says.

Opelski hopes that in addition to site improvements, buzz around new tenants, and upcoming events, increased recreational traffic on the Boardman River will also benefit Logan’s Landing. Paddleboard, kayak and bike rental company The River has established a new home base at nearby Medalie Park, while the last loop of the Boardman Lake Trail – soon to be completed – will bring countless bikers and joggers to the shopping center’s front door.

“We only have two vacant spaces left now,” says Opelski.
