TCAPS Students Invited To Perform At Michigan Youth Arts Festival

April 28, 2018

Dozens of students from Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) will be representing northern Michigan at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF) in Kalamazoo next month. Every year, MYAF spotlights the finest high school talent in Michigan, across artistic disciplines including music, dance, film, and more. The event, held each spring on the campus of Kalamazoo’s Western Michigan University, includes concerts, showcases, and workshops that feature nearly 1,000 high school students from throughout the state.

TCAPS music programs from both sides of town will have a notable presence at this year’s festival. Madison Hertel, a senior soprano vocalist at Traverse City West Senior High, was chosen as the top vocal soloist in the entire state. Hertel will be featured in two performances at MYAF, including a day recital at Dalton Center on Friday, May 11 and a Gala Concert that same evening at Miller Auditorium. For the concert at Miller, Hertel will have the opportunity to sing two pieces with orchestral accompaniment.

Lauren Fleming, a sophomore soprano vocalist from Traverse City Central High School, was also selected as one of the top soloists in the state. She will perform at Dalton Center during the day on May 11. Daniela Castillo, meanwhile, a sophomore soprano from West, was named to this year’s Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) All State Choir. The 120-voice ensemble rehearses throughout the festival and performs at Miller Auditorium on Saturday, May 12.

On the ensemble side, TC Central’s Choral-Aires, directed by Tamara Williams, was chosen as the top vocal ensemble at the MSVMA Central Division Solo & Ensemble Festival, held on April 21 in McBain. Three choirs from West – Choral-Aires, Bel’undici, and Westmen, all directed by Erich Wangeman – were also singled out as some of the strongest vocal ensembles in the MSVMA Central Division. All four choirs received MYAF invitations and will perform at Dalton Center on May 11.

Outside of singing, TCAPS will also be represented at MYAF by five instrumentalists from Traverse City Central. Elliott Smith, a senior trombonist, will perform with the MYAF Honors Orchestra at Miller Auditorium on May 12. The Quantum Quartet, a string ensemble featuring seniors Aili Simpson (violin), Amelia Burke (violin), Kaysen Mortensen-Chown (viola), and Quinten Gabrowski (cello), will take the stage at Dalton Center on the same day.

MYAF runs from Thursday, May 10 to Saturday, May 12. Many events and performances at the festival are free and open to the public. For a full calendar of public events, click here.
