Two Impaired Driving Incidents Lead To Arrests

By Beth Milligan | May 17, 2019

Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested two drivers in impaired driving cases this week.

In the first, a deputy patrolling Elmwood Township stopped a car at 2:22am Monday morning for going 52mph in a 40mph zone on M-22. The driver was identified as a 23-year-old woman from Atlanta, Georgia. The deputy detected an odor of alcohol and observed other signs of intoxication. After an investigation, the driver was placed under arrest for suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. She was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

On Tuesday at 8:16am, deputies and Suttons Bay Fire and Rescue responded to M-22 near Murray Court on a report of a single-vehicle accident. A car had driven off the roadway and struck a sign post. Upon arrival, emergency personnel located the driver, a 55-year-old Kewadin woman who had her five-year-old granddaughter in the vehicle with her.

An investigation determined the woman was heading north when she drove off the roadway. The driver was determined to be under the influence of numerous prescription medicines. She believed she was traveling downstate from Grayling. The driver was transported to Munson Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. She was then arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs and lodged in the Leelanau County Jail on that charge and a child endangerment charge. The child passenger was uninjured and turned over to other family members.
