Sunken Boat Recovered

The Maui Dream, a 25-foot cuddy cabin cruiser anchored in West Grand Traverse Bay near the volleyball courts, sunk over the weekend and had to be salvaged.

Traverse City Police were called about the 1987 Sea Ray in the middle of the night Sunday, says acting Chief Jeff O’Brien. Officers tracked down the owner and arranged for a boat recovery service to get the boat out of the water.

O’Brien says the owner, 45-year-old Randy Alan Vredenburg, currently lives at the Goodwill Inn, which is transition housing for homeless people. Vredenburg apparently towed his boat to the spot where it was anchored; he told police he has not put fuel in the boat in three years.

The absence of fuel meant the boat was removed without any fuel leaks.
