City Making Improvements to East Side Social District
The City of Traverse City is making improvements to the East Side Social District at Eighth Street and Garfield Avenue, "marking the first phase of enhancements designed to create a safer, more accessible, and more welcoming public gathering space," according to a release.
The city was awarded a $100,000 placemaking grant in February from Project for Public Spaces to support district improvements. "The grant-funded project builds on the city's ongoing placemaking efforts and incorporates community feedback that identified pedestrian safety, accessibility, shade, and greenery as priorities for the space," the release states.
City workers last week began milling and paving the district's slip lanes to improve surface conditions and create a smoother, more accessible environment for pedestrians and individuals using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. Grant funding will cover the cost of materials, while city crews will complete the work in-house.
Work on the south side began October 19, with improvements to the north side scheduled to begin October 26, weather permitting. Seasonal furnishings have been removed to accommodate construction and will return in the future. Additional future improvements under consideration include "expanded greenery, shade features, lighting, and furnishings to create a more comfortable and inviting public space," the release states.
A grand opening for the revamped East Side Social District is planned for next spring.
