Man With Five Prior DUIs Arrested For Drunk Driving In Elmwood Township

A 37-year-old man from Spruce, Michigan with five prior drunk driving convictions was arrested again on the same charge in Elmwood Township early Friday morning.

A Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputy patrolling M-22 near Cedar Cove Road at 1:04am attempted to stop a pick-up truck for failing to dim its headlights. The truck refused to stop for the patrol vehicle, then turned abruptly into a private driveaway. The male driver then exited the truck and fled on foot. He was apprehended by the deputy in the backyard of the residence and taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving.

The man turned out to have prior operating while intoxicated (OWI) convictions in 2005 and 2006 in Alpena, in 2008 in Wyoming, in 2010 in Charlevoix County, and in 2013 in Kalamazoo County. The last arrest also included a conviction for fleeing and eluding. The man was taken to Leelanau County Jail to face charges of felony OWI and driving on a denied and suspended driver's license.
