Monroe Street Reconstruction Starts Monday
Monroe Street will be closed from Bay Street to Wayne Street starting Monday as part of a planned full reconstruction of the corridor.
According to the City of Traverse City, contractors will start working on Monroe Street April 6. Monroe is the biggest city project on deck this year. In addition to the complete reconstruction of the street from Bay to Front – which will introduce bump-outs at every intersection and parking on both sides of the street – water and sanitary sewer improvements and green infrastructure like bioswales and drywells are planned. Monroe will also receive a realigned intersection with Bay Street.
The intersections of Monroe/Wayne and Monroe/Bay will have intermittent closures during this first phase. Drivers should expect temporary lane shifts, lane closures, and street segment closures while work is being done. The section between Bay and Wayne is expected to reopen to traffic by July 3. Other work activities on Monroe will continue throughout the construction season, with an anticipated completion date of October 30.
Access to all residences will be maintained, and signage will be in place around the work area.
