Norte Expands To Northport, Elk Rapids

Pro-bike advocacy group Norte is expanding its reach from Traverse City to Northport and Elk Rapids.

The organization said in a statement that "with support from the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, Norte is excited to bring their vision of happy, healthy, and strong communities to Northport and Elk Rapids." The group continued that "by partnering with local champions," it was "aiming to help weave a culture of health into the fabric of these towns to help them be their best – their healthiest."

The Northern Michigan Strong Project is a two-year project aiming to strengthen communities by developing "the next generation of happy, healthy, and strong leaders" through the Safe Routes To School initiative, Pro Walk/Pro Bike advocacy, youth empowerment projects, and mountain bike programs.

"By empowering kids to get off the couch, off the screen and outside, this project will help reduce childhood obesity, car lines at schools, traffic congestion, air pollution and social isolation, and build stronger, better connected and more walk/bike friendly communities in northern Michigan," Norte said in a statement.

Alison Metiva, Vice President Strategic Engagement and Programs at the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, added that GTRCF was "proud to be a supporter of Norte and to be part of the work they are leading to promote strong, vibrant and healthy communities" and was "excited to see both Northport and Elk Rapids embracing a commitment to happy, healthy, strong kids and families."
