Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore Feeling Summer Housing Crunch

For the first time, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore needs help finding housing for its seasonal workers. In the past, the park has been able to meet all its summer seasonal housing needs with its own stock of government-owned quarters; now it seeks housing for its park rangers, guides, maintenance workers, interns, and biological technicians. A higher-than-usual number of non-local employees combined with renovation projects on two of the government housing units has resulted in a situation many businesses in Leelanau, Benzie, and Grand Traverse Counties know well.

Superintendent Scott Tucker is using social media to request assistance from anyone who might have rental space available starting in April or May. He says National Lakeshore employees make great renters as they all have steady paychecks and have successfully completed background checks. He says most employees will be looking for temporary housing of four to seven months, preferably furnished apartments or rooms with cooking privileges.

Anyone interested should send detailed rental information, including a point of contact, to Lisa Griebel at sleepingbearinfo@nps.gov or call 231-326-4726.
