TC Man Arrested After Shooting Weapon in Apartment Building

A 49-year-old Traverse City man was arrested after shooting a weapon in his apartment last night, prompting a mass police response to the area near the M-72/M-22 roundabout by Tom's West Bay.

TC Police Department officers were dispatched to the apartment complex in the 10000 block of East Traverse Highway after a tenant heard gunshots coming from another apartment. Once on scene, officers could hear gunshots and see rounds being shot from an upstairs apartment.

Law enforcement established a perimeter, evacuated willing residents, and notified the public to stay away from the area. The suspect continued firing rounds from his apartment while officers were on scene. Officers were able to contact the suspect and talk him into surrendering peacefully.

A search warrant was executed on the suspect's apartment for evidence. Officers located two
firearms - a shotgun and a handgun - and numerous shell casings. There were no injuries to the public, first responders, or the suspect. The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Leelanau County Jail.

The Traverse City Police Department is requesting charges for: Felony Discharging a Firearm in a Dwelling or Occupied Structure, Felony Malicious Destruction of a Building, Felony Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Felony Possession of an Unregistered Firearm.

The Traverse City Police Department was assisted by the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office, Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Grand Traverse Tribal Police, Traverse City Fire Department, MMR, Grand Traverse County Central Dispatch, and Grand Traverse County Emergency Management.
