Two Killed In M22 Crash
Two Michigan men were killed in a three-vehicle crash on M22 Monday, the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday.
Deputies and Elmwood Township Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the accident at 12:16pm on M22/South West Bay Shore Drive one half-mile north of East Cherry Bend Road. According to deputies' investigation, 26-year-old Dominic Robert Holly of Mancelona was driving north on M22 when he crossed the center line, entering the southbound lane. Driving south at the time was 85-year-old Roy Lewis Vomastek of Marion, who was in a 2012 Kia. Vomastek tried to swerve to the right to avoid a collision, but struck Holly head-on. After the initial crash, a 37-year-old Kingsley man driving behind Vomastek in a large commercial utility vehicle also collided into Holly's Hyundai.
Holly was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Vomastek was transported to Munson Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the utility vehicle was uninjured in the crash.
The accident caused M22 to be closed to traffic for over four hours. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
