Woman Hits Child in Bicycle Trailer in Woodmere Crash

A 62-year-old Interlochen woman was cited after a crash Thursday in which she turned onto Woodmere Avenue in Traverse City and hit a bike trailer that was being pulled by a cyclist crossing the road. A one-year-old girl in the trailer was critically injured and taken to Munson Medical Center and then the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

According to the Traverse City Police Department, the Interlochen woman was driving west on Hannah Avenue in the left-turn lane shortly after 5pm. She had a green light and began turning south onto Woodmere Avenue. However, the woman said she did not see a cyclist who was crossing Woodmere in a marked crosswalk with the right of way. The cyclist was pulling a bike trailer carrying a one-year-old girl inside. The driver struck the bike trailer.

The child sustained critical injuries and was taken to Munson Medical Center, where she was stablized. The driver and cyclist were uninjured in the crash. The child was later transferred to the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital for further medical care. The driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Sobriety evaluations were performed on the driver, who showed no signs of impairment.

The Traverse City Police Department was assisted by the Traverse City Fire Department, MMR, and the Michigan State Police. The incident remains under investigation.
