Four OWIs, Domestic Assault, Accident Keep Leelanau Deputies Busy

June 28, 2016

Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputies had a busy weekend as they made four OWI arrests, handled a domestic violence call, and responded to a rollover accident involving a distracted teen driver.

OWI Arrests
A 27-year-old Suttons Bay was arrested Friday at 7:33pm after a deputy clocked him driving 81mph in a 2004 Audi on Southwest Bayshore Drive near Crain Hill Road. The driver had open intoxicants in the vehicle and was determined to be driving drunk. He was arrested on both counts.

On Saturday at 10:24pm, a deputy made another arrest on Southwest Bayshore Drive, this time near Shady Lane in Bingham Township. A caller reported that a Jeep was weaving over the center line of the roadway. The deputy stopped the Jeep in the Speedway gas station parking lot in Elmwood Township. The driver, a 21-year-old East Lansing woman, was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

Later Saturday night, at 11:07pm, a deputy stopped a Mazda in Glen Arbor for failing to stop at a stop sign intersection. The driver, a 51-year-old Glen Arbor woman, was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

Just after midnight early Monday morning, 911 Dispatch received a call of a breaking-and-entering in progress at a home in the 11,000 block of North Shore Drive in Leelanau Township. A resident was awoken by noises and found a woman trying to enter the rear door of the residence. The woman then fled on foot. While deputies were talking to the resident, a second caller reported a traffic accident in the 12,000 block of Woolsey Lake Road. Deputies found a 1995 Oldsmobile on the road which was disabled and appeared to have been driven a distance without a tire on the driver's side. When searching the area, deputies found a nude woman attempting to hide behind a tree. She was detained and identified as both the woman who had been banging at the door of the North Shore residence and the driver of the disabled Oldsmobile. The woman, who was intoxicated, indicated she was "on her way to go swimming," according to deputies. The woman was arrested for OWI second offense and leaving the scene of a traffic accident.

Domestic Violence
On Sunday at 12:43pm, deputies responded to a domestic distubance in the 10,000 block of Bingham Road. After investigating the disturbance, deputies arrested a 43-year-old man at the residence for domestic violence and probation violation.

Rollover Accident
A teen driver escaped serious injury after she rolled her Jeep while looking at her cell phone Sunday.

Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputies and Leland Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene of the accident on North Lake Leelanau Drive south of Sunset Shores Drive at 5:05pm. Responders found a 16-year-old female driver pinned inside her 2015 Jeep SUV being attended to by citizens. She was freed from her vehicle and treated at the scene for minor injuries by responders.

An investigation showed the teen was driving southbound on North Lake Leelanau Drive when she looked down at her cell phone. Her vehicle crossed the center line and drove off the northbound shoulder, leaving the roadway and rolling over.
