City To OK Equipment Install For Downtown WiFi

Oct. 6, 2014

Commission approval for Traverse City Light & Power (TCL&P) to use city-owned buildings to install wireless Internet equipment is the last step in free WiFi coming to downtown Traverse City. TC commissioners will sign off tonight on the installation of equipment at locations including the Hardy Parking Deck, Old Town Parking Deck, City Opera House and three separate areas within Clinch Park. There will be no cost to the city for the installation, as TCL&P will pay rent in equal measure to the cost of electricity for each installed unit. Equipment is proposed to be in place for 10 years, which is the duration of the WiFi agreement between TCL&P and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA).
