County Cremation Fee Nears Approval

May 23, 2014

At their May 28 meeting, Grand Traverse County Commissioners are expected to approve a $50 fee on cremations beginning June 1. County Health Director Wendy Trute appeared before the commission’s Ways and Means Committee to explain that the fees would generate revenues for the medical examiner’s office. Trute met last week with area funeral homes and discussed waiving the fees in certain circumstances. Commissioners voted to waive fees for deceased babies 1 year old and under, indigent families, and veterans receiving benefits from the Department of Human Services.

Trute estimated the waivers would affect only two percent of all cremations in the county.
