Planning Commission Supports ADUs

Feb. 4, 2015

Traverse City planning commissioners voted 6-2 Tuesday night to amend the city’s code of ordinances to allow accessory dwelling units (ADUs) – otherwise known as granny flats – within city limits. Commissioners Michael Dow and Bill Twietmeyer opposed the proposal, while Commissioner Jody Bergman was absent.

The change would allow single-family homeowners to rent out secondary dwellings on their property, such as apartments in detached garages or a basement or attic units, provided the owner lives on-site and the units do no exceed 800 square feet. Up to 10 new ADUs could be approved each year in the city, with a maximum of one unit per parcel.

Just under a dozen residents spoke at last night’s meeting about the resolution, with public comment slightly favoring support for the measure over opposition. While Commissioner Janet Fleshamn said she originally had concerns about the proposal, she concluded that “the benefits of flexible housing are something we should be encouraging.” Commissioner Linda Koebert agreed, noting: “I’m excited to be part of a body that will consider a different form of housing downtown…it’s prudent (and) there are lots of safeguards built into it.”

The ADU amendment will now head to the city commission for final approval.
