TCAPS Superintendent Announces Retirement

March 20, 2014

The Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education will soon launch a search for a new superintendent. In a letter to TCAPS families yesterday afternoon, Superintendent Steve Cousins announced his retirement effective July 1.

Under Cousins' leadership, TCAPS advanced key efforts under its strategic plan, including increasing global competency through development of student exchange programs, elementary world language programs and adoption of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. It also expanded the district's Montessori program, created an Online Academy, the Front Street Writers Program and launched three early college academies through partnership with NMC. Cousins also eliminated the $5 million dollar structural deficit that faced the district when he first took over.

Also during Cousins' tenure, the district suffered two consecutive defeats for bond proposals for building upgrades.
