Traverse City Openings, Closings & Moves

Dec. 30, 2014

January looks to be a busy month as numerous Traverse City restaurants and more prepare to open, expand/rebrand, move or close.

Opening
The Workshop Brewing Company is putting the final touches on new breakfast spot The Remedy with the goal of opening by mid-January. Chef Scott Williams says the eatery will feature “scratch-made breakfast, grab-and-go breakfast sandwiches, house-cured meats, daily chef's specials and Bloody Beers and beer mimosas” featuring Workshop brews. A sample menu posted on the door lists items including confit-fried chicken and sweet potato waffles, malted red-velvet waffles, stuffed brioche French Toast and spent-grain biscuits with pulled-pork gravy. The space will double as an event venue at night.

Around the corner, owner Chuck Korson says new coffee shop BLK MRKT could be open within a matter of days. “We're getting really close,” he says. “We're down to our final inspections.” The cafe will feature coffee, tea and beverage services and in-house baked goods, with an expanded food menu available this spring. BLK MRKT will operate seven days a week from 7am-3pm.

Over on Fourteenth Street, the Manila Asian Market will open the first week of January next to Ming's Garden. A company representative said the store will offer Asian-themed food products, including “dry and frozen goods.”

Further down Fourteenth at the corner of Cass, Traverse City Whiskey Company owner Chris Fredrickson is preparing to open his 2,200 square-foot distillery, tasting room and retail store in January. “We're working out a few final details with the city...but the place is ready,” says Fredrickson. The taproom will offer tastings and sales of the company's products, along with a cocktail menu and occasional special events.

TC native Phil Smith will also get into the beverage business when he launches TC Roots Juicery this spring. The cold-press organic juice company will feature five staple flavors and rotating seasonal flavors, which Smith plans to distribute at local grocery stores. Smith hopes to open a storefront later in 2015. “We plan to...educate communities on the vast benefits of living and sustaining a healthy life,” he says, noting that he wants to target area schools to include the juices in their cafeterias.

Expanding/Rebranding
Two downtown eateries will get a complete makeover in 2015. Union Cantina on Union Street will close January 5-7 and reopen on January 8 as Union Tap & Grill. Owner Matt Davies will introduce a new American menu closer to that of his other restaurants (including Peninsula Grill, Bad Dog Deli, Riverwalk Grill and Western Avenue Grille), featuring fish, steaks, burgers, flatbreads and 14 beers on draft.

Over on Front Street, the Cherry Cone Joe Welsh will expand this spring to offer high-end deli sandwiches and housemade food products (including chocolates and honey) in addition to his coffee bar and non-GMO ice cream. The new Milk & Honey Cafe and Ice Creamery will offer downtown delivery of sandwiches and ice cream beginning in April or May.

One block east, Nolan's Tobacco owner Mike Nolan says he hopes to open his expanded cigar bar by January 15. The new space will serve beer, wine and alcohol along with some food appetizers and will allow for on-site cigar smoking.

Moving
With remodeling set to begin in the newly announced Grandview Market, several tenants in the building are seeking new locations after receiving their 30 days' notice. Elevated Arts co-owner Brett Nichols says the company is “actively looking for space,” including a possible spot at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Stained glass company Hurley's Beveling Co. plans to have staff work out of a company workshop until spring, when they hope to reopen in a new location. A representative from medical marijuana dispensary Select Pro-Visions says the company hopes to negotiate to stay in the building and has not yet made relocation plans.

Closing
Hooters on US-31 has closed for the winter, according to a notice posted on the door Monday. “As of Monday, December 29, 2014, we are closed for the winter months. See you in the spring. We apologize for any inconvenience,” reads the sign. A staff member who answered the phone at the restaurant could not offer an explanation for the closing but confirmed employees had been told it would reopen in the spring. Hooters had been listed for sale in 2013, but that listing says the property is now “off-market.”
