Inman Recall Back On

In a 7-0 vote, the Michigan Supreme Court ordered that the attempt to recall State Representative Larry Inman continue. It reversed the decision of the Court of Appeals, which had sided with the Board of Canvassers that the omission of the word “right” in one of the charges against Inman invalidated the petitions. The Supreme Court said the reasons given for recall in the circulated petitions were not different that the reasons that were approved by the Board of Canvassers.

While the ruling means the recall can continue, state elections director Sally Williams informed the committee previously that an initial review uncovered nearly 1,800 invalid signatures among the 13,859 signatures the group collected. That would leave it short of the roughly 12,200 needed. The signatures will now be formally reviewed.

A jury acquitted Inman of lying to the FBI. Jurors deadlocked on attempted bribery and extortion charges stemming from an alleged scheme to trade his vote on wage legislation for campaign donations from a union, and he may be tried again in federal court.
