Dennos To Celebrate 25 Years

May 30, 2016

In celebration of its 25th anniversary July 6, Dennos Museum is hosting three special exhibitions. Soo Sunny Park, associate professor of art at Dartouth College, will recreate a version of her installation “Unwoven Light” in the Schmuckal Gallery. The sculptural composition of chain-link fencing and iridescent Plexiglas in organic shapes will create a shimmering world of light, shadow, and color. Park will install the work from June 6-10.

“Seed Universe” by Ilhwa Kim of Seoul, Korea, consists of hand-dyed, cut, and rolled sheets of Korean mulberry paper, which form colorful, three-dimensional works of art in vibrant patterns and shapes. The artist developed this nearly sculptural way of creating artworks using layers of paper, which she calls “seeds,” to make the surface and sense of her images change from morning to night.

Andy Warhol’s “Silver Clouds” consists of large helium-filled, pillow-like forms made from silver plastic film. First shown in 1966 at the Castelli Gallery in New York, the clouds will float in a confined space of the Binsfeld Gallery, where they will move gently on fan-propelled wind, allowing visitors to experience an interactive and blissful walk through the pop artist’s interpretation of the heavens.

Dennos will also showcase two exhibits paying homage to its history: the first two paintings by former MSU painting professor Clif McChesney to be hung on the court walls, and the glass artistry of Dale Chihuly featuring works from the Dennos collection.

The exhibition will open for museum members and guests on Saturday June 11 at 7pm. At 8pm the Jeff Haas Quintet will showcase jazz classics from the likes of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis, as well as originals. In 1991, Haas conceived and organized what became the concert series at Milliken Auditorium, which now includes jazz, blues, classical and world music.

The Dennos Anniversary Exhibition opening and Jeff Haas concert are open to museum members and invited guests free of charge. Memberships are available by calling the Dennos Museum Center at 231-995-1055.
