Elmwood Township Sets Recount Date

Nov. 28, 2014

A date has been set to recount a tie vote in a November 4 Elmwood Township election that caused a proposed fire department millage to fail.

The Leelanau County Board of Canvassers will meet on Friday, December 5 at 10am in the Community Meeting Room of the Leelanau County Government Center in Suttons Bay to conduct the recount, which was requested by petition by two residents. The public is allowed to attend the recount to witness the proceedings.

The proposed six-year fire department millage - which initially garnered 1,126 votes of support and 1,126 votes of opposition - would raise Elmwood Township's mill from .78 to 2.0. Without the millage, the township is facing a $220,000 budget shortfall in 2015, as the current mill will expire at the end of the year.
