Lids for Kids: May 14

April 29, 2016

Need a lid for that bicycle-riding kid? On Sat., May 14, children ages 4-12 from the Traverse City area can stop by F&M Park, get fitted with a free bicycle helmet, learn bike safety tips and enjoy family-friendly activities thanks for various businesses and organizations working to prevent head injuries in children.

Trained volunteers will be on hand to custom-fit every helmet. Children must be present to receive a helmet. The event runs from 10am to 12 pm at the park between E. State and Washington streets. In addition to the helmet, children can register to win a bicycle from McLain Cycle & Fitness, test their skills on a bicycle obstacle course, meet local firefighters and tour a fire engine.

Originally known as Heads Up for Safety, Lids for Kids began 15 years ago in Lansing. It expanded to Grand Rapids in 2014 and will be held in Traverse City for the first time this year. The local event is sponsored by Agevix, Sinas Dramis Law Firm, the Brain Injury Association of Michigan and Northern Express. In addition to McLain, community partners include Traverse City Area Public Schools, Norte Youth Cycling, WTCM NewsTalk 580 and Anytime Fitness.
