Man Tasered, Arrested At TC Shell Station

Sept. 29, 2016

A 35-year-old Traverse City man who called 911 on himself was tasered and arrested at a Shell gas station at the corner of LaFranier and South Airport roads in Traverse City Tuesday night.

Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the station at 10:29pm after the man called 911 to say he had committed a crime. The man appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was acting bizarrely when deputies approached him at the station, according to the Sheriff's Office. The man had a fixed-blade knife and pill bottles in his pocket. When a deputy asked him to step outside and away from store patrons to talk, the man refused and began fighting the deputy. The deputy tasered the man and then secured him with assistance from a store clerk.

The deputy was treated at Munson Medical Center for a shoulder dislocation suffered in the scuffle. The suspect was evaluated at the hospital and medically cleared before being taken to Grand Traverse County Jail. Charges will be requested against the man for disorderly person and resisting and obstructing police causing injury.

During the altercation with the deputy, the man made statements about having molested someone. No other facts or information were provided. The man is currently on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry and "may have been referring to crimes he had already been to prison for," according to the Sheriff's Office.
