Autopsy Shows "No Obvious Signs Of Foul Play" In TC Woman's Death

Sept. 8, 2016

An autopsy conducted on the body of Northwestern Michigan College faculty member Sonja Olshove - who was discovered dead Sunday morning on a private Old Mission beach - revealed "no obvious signs of foul play," according to the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office.

The autopsy was conducted Tuesday in Kalamazoo. In addition to the autopsy, the GT Sheriff's Office also said its preliminary investigation found no immediate signs of foul play. The department said the investigation into Olshove's cause of death remained ongoing and that the "full autopsy results will not be available for several weeks."

News of the death of the 49-year-old NMC instructor, who taught sociology and psychology and was a two-time recipient of the college's Imogene Wise Faculty Excellence Award, sent shock waves through the community. NMC President Tim Nelson called Olshove's passing "an enormous loss for NMC, the community and for Sonja's family," and said Olshove's "caring dedication...inspired both her students and co-workers."

A life celebration for Olshove will be held at the Hagerty Center Sunday (Sept. 11). Visitation is scheduled for 1-3pm, followed by a funeral service beginning at 3pm. NMC is also offering confidential counseling services for students at 231-995-1118 and employees through the Employee Assistance Program at 231-947-8110, ext. 27.
