Bomb Threat Evacuates GT Academy

Sept. 21, 2016

A note containing a bomb threat prompted the evacuation and closure of Grand Traverse Academy Tuesday.

The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the school just after 8:30am after a teacher found a note indicating there was a bomb in the school. Students and staff were evacuated from the building, and an automated telephone message went out to parents requesting them to pick their children up from the school. Staff waited outside the building with students until their pick-up could be facilitated. The evacuation caused heavy traffic congestion and back-ups on Three Mile Road as parents waited in line upwards of an hour to reach their students.

Both GT Sheriff's Office and Traverse City Police Department K-9s trained in bomb-sniffing were brought in to search the property. The school was declared safe and clear early Tuesday afternoon. No bombs were located in the school. Authorities are working with school officials to determine who was responsible for the note that prompted the evacuation. The case remains under investigation.
