Community Foundation Awards Nearly $200K In Scholarships

By Beth Milligan | Aug. 23, 2017

The Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships this year, the organization announced Tuesday.

A total of 196 scholarships were awarded to students this year, with more than half of the awards coming from Regional Scholarships, which are available to students from one or more schools throughout the region. The remaining scholarships are awarded in partnership with Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) through funds designated to benefit a student or students from one or more of the three TCAPS high schools.

“Our scholarships mostly support graduating high school seniors, providing a boost as they transition to college,” says Alison Metiva, director of community relations for GTRCF. “We do have a few for returning college students or non-traditional students – our scholarships span trade school to medical school.”

The variety of scholarships offered reflect a diverse set of eligibility and criteria related to academic performance, financial need, community involvement, planned major, and/or career path. The Community Foundation "works closely with donors when the gift is made to create the scholarship to identify the criteria that is meaningful to the donor and helps accomplish the donor’s goals," according to the GTRCF.
