Details Emerge In Fatal Long Lake Shooting
Oct. 18, 2016
More details are emerging in the case of a fatal shooting this weekend in Long Lake Township.
Thirty-year-old David Peretiatko was shot and killed Friday night at a Jacks Trail residence. His wife, 23-year-old Ashley Peretiatko, was shot in the hand and face and was taken to Munson Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. She was later transferred to the University of Michigan hospital for additional treatment.
Details outlined in a criminal complaint filed against Ashley by County Prosecuting Attorney Bob Cooney indicate the Peretiatkos were conspiring to kidnap their two young children from Ashley's father and mother. James Barron, Ashley's father, and his wife have legal custody of the children. The Peretiatkos had been living out west away from the Barrons when Ashley returned home alone in early October and moved back in with her parents. Shortly thereafter, the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office was notified by the Las Vegas Police Department that David was a suspect in a homicide in Las Vegas. It was believed David had stabbed a victim in a hotel room, then stole the victim's car to drive across the country to Michigan. The Sheriff's Office alerted James Barron that David might be heading to his home.
On Friday night, Barron walked into his basement to find David coming out of a downstairs bathroom with a gun pointed at his head. Barron was armed and drew his weapon and shot David, killing the man. Barron then ran upstairs to retrieve another weapon and returned to the basement. When he returned, he saw his daughter "pointing a pistol directly at (him)," according to the report. Barron then shot and injured Ashley. The Barrons notified both the Sheriff's Office and Central Dispatch of the shootings.
Ashley is facing felony charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and possessing a firearm when committing a felony. She is still hospitalized and has not yet been arrested. James Barron is not facing charges or arrest at this time. Authorities are continuing to investigate the shootings and are still awaiting autopsy results and crime scene analysis.
