Dig Into Earth Day With Northern Express

April 21, 2015

Just in time for Earth Day Wednesday, this week's Northern Express - sister publication of The Ticker - celebrates our local lands with several features dedicated to the environment and outdoors.

In "Northern Michigan Environmental Watchlist," investigative reporter Patrick Sullivan examines the top five environmental threats to the region - and the steps local organizations and individuals are taking to address them. From microplastics, sedimentation runoff and algae blooms in our lakes - which could also be targeted in the future by drought-afflicted states - to the aging Mackinac Straits pipeline, experts weigh in on the most serious issues likely to face our area in the coming years.

On a lighter note, Ross Boissoneau checks out the many forms of gardeners embracing cultivation and growth across northern Michigan, from nursery workers to garden club members to at-home enthusiasts. "Gardeners of All Stripes" also features guides to local seed and garden supply stores, as well as tips to help the overwhelmed beginner achieve gardening success in their own backyard.

In "Local Forests Under Siege," writer Nick Beadleston explores a range of issues including aggressive fungus, invasive insects and sprawling development that threaten one of our region's most important assets.

This week's issue also features a regional round-up of Earth Day celebrations and events, an in-depth story on the new 300-acre Ziibimijwang Farm project in Petoskey owned by the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, a profile of landscape and nature artist Kathie Briggs - and much more! Check out the Northern Express online, or pick up a free copy at one of more than 600 distribution spots across 13 counties. And, stay connected throughout the week on Facebook
