Farmhouse Fire Shuts Down Hammond Road
By Beth Milligan | Jan. 29, 2026
A heavy fire in a two-story farmouse in the 200 block of West Hammond Road closed down part of the corridor to all traffic Wednesday as firefighters battled the blaze in freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall.
Responders were dispatched to the fire at 5:38pm Wednesday. The occupants of the farmhouse had all evacuated prior to the arrival of fire crews. In addition to poor weather, firefighting operations were challenged by the "building’s construction" and "advanced fire conditions," according to GT Metro Fire. "A second alarm was requested, bringing additional resources to the scene. Due to fire suppression activities, Hammond Road was closed to all traffic between Hughes Drive and Townline Road."
The fire was brought under control at approximately 8pm. Hammond Road was reopened to traffic at approximately 9:45pm. There were no reported injuries to emergency services personnel. One occupant of the home was transported to Munson Medical Center for evaluation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
GT Metro was assisted on the scene by the Traverse City Fire Department, Blair Township Emergency Services, Mobile Medical Response, the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office, Grand Traverse 911, and the Grand Traverse County Road Commission.
