Fire Destroys Part Of Ranch Rudolph Property

Feb. 1, 2016

A fire destroyed the general store, laundry room and back garage at Ranch Rudolph in Traverse City Friday night.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities believe it may have originated with a stove in the building. No people or animals were injured in the blaze, and the resort's main lodge, rooms and bunkhouse were all untouched. Crews battled the fire until early Saturday morning.

While owners Sid and Melody Hamill called the fire "a great loss" in a written statement to customers, saying it "took a part of our history and heritage," the couple also expressed their gratitude for the safety of guests and staff as well as the areas of the resort that were spared.

"What initially felt an incomprehensible tragedy now feels like such a blessing and a great reminder as to what is truly important," the Hamills wrote. "There is no way possible to even begin to describe the heartfelt offerings, prayers and well wishes we have received." The couple described receiving emails from around the world this weekend in the fire's aftermath, friends and neighbors stopping by to help with resort chores and clean-up, and guests who "were patient and understanding in dealing with the loss of heat, power and amenities."

"Please know our hearts are full of love and gratitude," wrote the Hamills. "Thank you again for helping keep the Ranch history alive and loving this place as much as we do."
