Five Arrested In Streeters Brawl

May 9, 2017

As many as 30 people were brawling and 20 more were standing around, either watching or trying to break up fights, following a hip-hop show at Traverse City’s Streeters Saturday night.

Traverse City Police arrested three people and Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two people after bystanders called 911 at 12:33am Sunday. Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputies were also called in to help diffuse the melee.

A TCPD officer arrived to find dozens of people in the nightclub’s parking lot and a group of people surrounding two women who were fighting, one of them holding down the other by her hair, says TCPD Chief Jeff O’Brien.

A 26-year-old Traverse City man tried to pull the aggressive woman off the other as the officer attempted to handcuff her and the man refused to let go. A TCPD sergeant arrested the 26-year-old and officers and Streeters security formed a circle around the officer as he attempted to arrest the 23-year-old Traverse City woman as a group of men tried to assault the officer, O’Brien says. Another man, a 22-year-old Traverse City man who attempted to get in the way of officers, was also arrested.

The three were arrested on disorderly conduct and resisting charges; the female victim of the assault vanished into the crowd.

Deputies arrested two men for disorderly conduct, a 23-year-old Traverse City man and a 31-year-old Grand Rapids man. The men who were arrested had blood-alcohol levels that ranged from .01 to .226; the woman’s blood alcohol level was not available.
Apparently no one was seriously injured. The woman complained of difficulty breathing and she was taken to Munson Medical Center to be checked out before she was taken to jail.

The melee followed an 18-and-over hip hop show called #LittyIn TraversCity that featured local act Age and guests.

The event was called off early after two women got into a fight inside and police were called; as the police investigated, an altercation broke out in the parking lot, says owner Douglas Street.

O’Brien says investigators are still trying to piece together what happened.

“We certainly would like to know who the victim was,” O’Brien says. “If anybody has any video, we’d love to see that.”
