Free Breast Cancer Awareness Event Monday At State Theatre

Oct. 1, 2016

The Smith Family Breast Center, Cowell Family Cancer Center, and Great Lakes Plastic Surgery Center will host a special free event Monday night at 6pm the State Theatre in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event will include the screening of two short films, a Skype session with one of the film's subjects, and a community panel with local experts and survivors. Films shown will include:

"One Way: Journey to this Moment"
Description: Experience the story of TC Native Michelle Grinsel. When Michelle learned she had stage IV cancer, she knew there was only One Way forward. She couldn't go back to her carefree existence. With her fighting spirit and forward momentum, this life threatening diagnosis has led her to find peace and solace in savoring each moment. This film isn’t just about cancer. It is about choosing your attitude in order to overcome adversity and making the most of your time on Earth. Michelle's vulnerability and honest admissions have made her a spokesperson for resilience, strength and abundant living. The film promotes the message that life is precious, and you don't need a life-threatening diagnosis to savor it. Not Rated, 30 mins. Q&A with Michelle Grinsel via Skype.

"Mondays at Racine"
Description: Every third Monday of the month, two bold, brassy sisters open the doors of their Long Island hair salon to women diagnosed with cancer. As locks of hair fall to the floor, women gossip, giggle, weep, face their fears, and discover unexpected beauty. Oscar-nominated. Not Rated, 40 mins.

The screenings will be followed by a community panel featuring: F Matthew Smith, MD, FACS, Great Lakes Plastic Surgery Center; Adrian Seah, MD, Surgical Associates; Christopher LaFond, MD, MPH, Surgical Associates; Ashley Sachtleben, DO, Grand Traverse Surgery; Hilary Tarsney, RT/(R)(M), Smith Family Breast Health Center; Dana Hoffman, FNP-C, Cancer Genetics Clinic at Munson Medical Center; Cori Dean, Breast Cancer Survivor.
