Free Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Thursday

By Beth Milligan | June 18, 2018

Grand Traverse County residents can drop off household hazardous waste (HHW) materials at a collection event Thursday, June 21.

County residents are encouraged to get rid of outdated or unwanted household chemicals, pesticides, solvents, paints, etc, during the event by scheduling an appointment online or by calling the RecycleSmart Hotline at 231-941-5555. The HHW drop-off location will be provided upon appointment confirmation. Staff at the event offer drive-thru disposal of items so residents don’t have to leave their vehicles. Drop-off hours will be 1pm to 7pm Thursday.

Residents can dispose of up to 150 pounds of hazardous materials at no charge. A $1.30/pound fee will be charged for quantities greater than 150 pounds. Items accepted at the HHW event include oil-based paint, latex paint, solvents, automotive fluids, household cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and more.

Subsequent events will be held August 9 and September 29.
