Grand Traverse County Treasurer’s Office Suspends Passport Services

By Craig Manning | Dec. 4, 2025

Need a passport photo? One of the main local options for that service is off the table until further notice. The Grand Traverse County Treasurer’s office announced on Wednesday that it “has suspended operations as an official United States Department of State passport facility as of December 1, 2025.” The pause is due to renovation work that will soon be underway at the Governmental Center.

Historically, the Treasurer’s Office has partnered with the County Clerk’s office to take passport photos and assist people in submitting passport applications. Local residents have been able to access those services on the first floor of the Governmental Center. Because of renovations that will relocate first-floor county services to other parts of the building, though, these passport services will be on hold until renovations are complete. There is no specific date for when the services will resume.

“The Grand Traverse County Treasurer’s office will be undergoing renovations soon and moving to a temporary space which is not conducive to providing those passport services,” a county press release noted. “With the renovations and the Clerk's office moving to the historic courthouse during that time, coupled with the security measures to access the building, it makes it difficult for people to get their photo, and for the Treasurer’s office to offer full passport services.”

According to the press release, the Treasurer’s office and the Clerk’s office still plan on honoring any appointments scheduled for December, but new passport appointments are unavailable.

While the renovations are underway, Grand Traverse County Treasurer Jamie Callahan is encouraging locals to use other facilities authorized by the State Department for their passport needs. “In Grand Traverse County, those are East Bay and Acme Township offices and the U.S. Post office on Union Street in downtown Traverse City, Michigan,” Callahan said.
