GT County Among Fastest Growing Counties In Michigan

Grand Traverse County is among the top three fastest-growing counties in Michigan, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data.
The 2015 population estimate for Grand Traverse County is 91,636 - an increase of 4,650 since 2010. The county has maintained an average annual growth rate of 1.1 percent over the last five years. Since 2010, the three fastest-growing counties in Michigan have been Ottawa (6.1 percent), Kent (5.6 percent) and Grand Traverse (5.3 percent). Overall, Grand Traverse County accounts for 97 percent of the total population growth in the six-county region since 2010, according to a report prepared on the census data this month by County Planning Director John Sych.
Of the remaining five neighboring counties, three have also experienced positive growth since 2010. Leelanau County grew from 21,708 to 21,981, an increase of 273 residents (1.3 percent). Wexford County grew from 32,735 to 33,003, an increase of 268 (0.8 percent). Kalkaska County grew from 17,153 to 17,260, an increase of 107 (0.6 percent).
Antrim and Benzie counties both experienced slight population declines. Antrim County dropped from 23,580 to 23,154, a loss of 426 (-1.8 percent). Benzie County dropped from 17,525 to 17,457, a loss of 68 (-0.4 percent).
2015 census data for local units of government - including cities, townships and villages - will be released later this spring.
