GT County Clerk Announces Retirement

By Beth Milligan | April 22, 2026

Grand Traverse County Clerk Bonnie Scheele has announced her retirement effective June 19.

Scheele is retiring after more than four decades in public service, according to a county release. She began her career in Thirteenth Circuit Court in 1986 in the Friend of the Court Office, where she served for nearly eleven years. In 1997 she was appointed as the chief deputy county clerk. After 15 years in that role, Scheele ran for office and was elected as county clerk, a position she has held for over 13 years.

"During her tenure, Clerk Scheele played a critical role in maintaining official county records, bolstering transparency and accuracy in elections, and ensuring the integrity and accessibility of vital public documents," according to the release. "Her leadership has helped guide the office through evolving election laws, technological changes, and increasing demands for transparency and service."

County Administrator Nate Alger said Scheele has "consistently demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and a deep commitment to serving the residents of Grand Traverse County. I’ve valued our strong working relationship and the steady, collaborative approach she brought to her role every day. Her leadership will be missed, and I wish her all he best in her well-earned retirement."

Under Michigan law, Scheele's vacancy will be filled through an appointment made by the judges of Thirteenth Circuit Court. More information will be released soon on the appointment process, according to the county.
