A 33-year-old Kingsley man went on an extensive criminal driving spree Friday, racking up numerous charges as he rammed his car into Munson Medical Center and other businesses and violated a personal protection order.
According to Captain Chris Clark of the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office, authorities responded to a Long Lake Township residence at 11pm Friday, where the suspect had driven his truck into the home's garage door. The suspect then drove to another residence in Long Lake Township, which was a violation of a personal protection order in place against him.
The suspect then drove to another business off US-31 South in Garfield Township and drove through the front doors, according to Clark. Deputies located the subject driving on South Airport Road near LaFranier Road, where a short chase occurred. The suspect was then taken into custody. Deputies learned the man had also driven his car through the front doors of businesses off Silver Lake Road and Cass Road in Garfield Township.
Munson Healthcare confirmed its facilities were among those targeted by the suspect. The driver backed his car through the main entrance of both Munson Medical Center and Copper Ridge Surgery Center, according to a post on Munson's Facebook page.
"We are grateful that there were no injuries to patients, visitors, or staff at either site and that law enforcement has the suspect in custody," the post states. "The Munson Medical Center main entrance has been repaired and is open. Copper Ridge Surgery Center will open as planned on Monday morning. The safety of every patient, visitor, and staff member is Munson Healthcare’s top priority, and we thank local law enforcement for their support and swift action with this incident."
The suspect was arrested on six counts of felony malicious destruction of property, fleeing and eluding, and violation of a personal protection order.
