Kroupa, McElyea Lose Seats; Millages Pass

Grand Traverse County Commissioner Alisa Kroupa and County Drain Commissioner Kevin McElyea both lost their seats in Tuesday's primary, while a slate of millages in Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties were approved by voters. (Note: The following results represent unofficial tallies with all precincts reporting as of early Wednesday morning.)
Kroupa lost the Republican nomination for county commissioner in district 3 to challenger Cheryl Gore Follette by a 966-738 vote. Commissioners Ron Clous, Addison "Sonny" Wheelock, Carol Crawford and Christine Maxbauer - all running unopposed as Republicans - retained their spots on the November ballot. Commissioner Dan Lathrop fended off former county administrator K. Ross Childs for the Republican nomination by a 1,554-1,250 vote, while Commissioner Bob Johnson narrowly defeated Marc McKellar 793-735. The county commission candidates moving ahead to November are:
District 1: Dan Lathrop (R), Emily Ely Jackson (D)
District 2: Christine Maxabuer (R)
District 3: Cheryl Gore Follette (R), Thomas Grigal (D)
District 4: Addison Wheelock Jr. (R)
District 5: Ron Clous (R)

District 7: Bob Johnson (R)
In a three-way race for county drain commissioner, Grand Traverse Conservation District Boardman River Coordinator Steve Largent unseated three-term incumbent McElyea by a 6,216-3,172 vote. A third candidate, City Engineering Technician Scott Johnson, garnered 2,047 votes.
While Garfield Township Supervisor Chuck Korn held off challenger Brad Jewett 1,053-950, Peninsula Township Supervisor Pete Correia was resoundingly defeated by Robert Manigold for his seat by a 1,854-288 vote. Other new faces winning nominations Tuesday for township supervisor in contested races included Rob Lajko (R) in Paradise Township, Marvin Radtke (R) in Green Lake Township, Nicole Blonshine (R) in Blair Township, and Beth Friend (R) in East Bay Township.
Grand Traverse County voters Tuesday also approved millages by strong margins for the Commission on Aging, the TC Senior Center Network, Traverse Area District Library, Buckley Community Schools, and Blair and Fire Lake Township ambulance services.
Leelanau County voters also approved a slate of millages Tuesday. A county-wide .5 mill levy renewal for 2016-2017 for road maintenance and repairs passed overwhelmingly by a 4,059-745 vote, while Suttons Bay-Bingham, Glen Lake and Leland Township residents all passed millages to support their libraries. Voters in Centerville, Suttons Bay-Bingham, Cleveland, Leelanau and Solon townships supported levies to fund their fire and/or ambulance services, while Leelanau Township passed a millage renewal to support its general fund.
In the Leelanau County commission race, Dale Schaub defeated Mike Taylor in district 5 to clinch the Republican nomination, while Tony Ansorge defeated Samuel Campillo in district 1 for the Republican spot. Candidates moving ahead to November include:

District 6: Casey Noonan (R), Carolyn Rentenbach (D)
District 7: Melinda Lautner (R), John O’Neill (D)
On the state level, retired Marine lieutenant general Jack Bergman defeated state Sen. Tom Casperson and former state Sen. Jason Allen for the Republican nomination in the 1st Congressional District. Past Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lon Jonson defeated former Kalkaska County sheriff Jerry Cannon for the Democratic nod. In the State House of Representatives 104th District, Rep. Larry Inman defeated Jason Gillman for the Republican nomination in the 104th District, while Betsy Coffia took the Democratic nomination. And in the State House of Representatives 101st District, Curt VanderWall (R) will face off against Dan Scripps (D) in November after defeating fellow Republican candidates Mark Walter and Cary Urka.
