Last Full-Service Gas Station in TC Closes

Feb. 1, 2011

Blarney Castle of Bear Lake has closed another Clark gas station in TC.

A company spokesperson confirms that the station located at 320 N. Division was closed last night, as well as a station on Main Street in Gaylord.

The company shuttered the 732 E. Front St. Clark station across from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy last summer.

Blarney Castle’s Clark stations were among the last in northern Michigan to offer complimentary full-service gas.

Nevertheless, the smaller sites “haven’t been profitable,” says Blarney Castle Petroleum Sales Manager Dennis McCarthy. “Most of the sales (at gas stations) come from inside store sales, and we basically could only sell cigarettes and gas. The sites weren’t fit to offer a good, clean store with convenience items.”

Blarney Castle operates 90 EZ Mart locations across the state. It purchased the Clark stations out of bankruptcy six years ago.

Blarney owns the North Division acreage but has “no plans to develop it” because of its smaller size, McCarthy says.

The company had leased the Front Street property, which is listed for $189,000 through Michael Lippett at Landmark Commercial Real Estate Services in Farmington Hills. Lippett says he hasn’t received any written offers, but has heard “a variety of ideas – some very creative.” It’s a prime location, he adds, but at a quarter-acre is also a “very small site” for development. The site is cleaned up but still contains the tanks, he adds.

Once primarily a Great Lakes region company, Clark Brands, based in Naperville, Ill., now operates in 28 states from Arizona to Maryland.

During the 1980s and 90s, Clark had several ownership changes during which the company expanded its retail and refining operations. Like many other independent oil companies, the company faced a series of financial challenges. In 2003, a team of oil industry veterans and other investors acquired the Clark gasoline brand and other key brands in the Clark family and formed Clark Brands, LLC.

The company licenses the Clark gasoline brand and the Four Corners Coffee brand to independent petroleum marketers and retailers.
